The climate of Madrid is continental Mediterranean though evidently highly influenced by its condition as a major city. Winters are cold with temperatures below 6°C, with frequent frosts and occasional snowfalls. Summers are hot at around 24°C in July and August, sometimes rising above 35°C, though the city's high altitude (600m) means that night temperatures tend to be cooler, leading to a lower average for the summer months. These extremes give rise to the saying Nueve meses de invierno, tres meses de infierno (nine months of winter, three months of hell). Rains of 400mm a year situate Madrid on the edge of a semi-arid climate with a marked drought from June to Septiemer.
