Rural Tourism and accommodation in the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà
S Els Aiguamolls de l'Empordà is the second most important refuge for wetland birds in Catalonia, and one of best sites in the Eastern Mediterranean. In all, some 300 species of bird have been recorded here including 90 odd breeders. The reserve is one of the best managed sites in Spain - and a personal favourite. A great place to stay is Ca la Maria del Marqués in the village of Fortià (Googlemap), just two kilometres walk from the main park entrance, and a few minutes drive from superb beaches. Curiously, the house, dating from the the late 19th century, was built by a local marquee for his lover, Maria. It has been recently restored, conserving the original structure. The house is rented as a single piece with a living/dining room with a fireplace, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a fully fitted kitchen. There is also a barbecue on the terrace
