HISTORY

The history of Soria is evident in every corner of the province. The rock art sites are testimony to human occupation in this area for over 5000 years. The fossilised dinosaur footprints dating back 140 million years are clearly visible in many archaeological sites . Evidence of its past great importance can be seen in the Celt Iberian and Roman settlements of Numancia, Tiermes and Uxama.

Soria has the greatest concentration of castles in Europe , as these were the frontier lands for the battles between Christian and Arab armies. Examples of Romanesque architecture can be seen in its numerous churches and hermitages and medieval villages tell tales of Knights Templar and El Cid. Antonio Machado, Spain 's favourite poet was sent into great heights of lyricism, by the beauty he saw whilst wandering these lands.
