BIRDS OF PREY (Vultures and Eagles)
The Canyon Rio Lobos Nature Park is a protected area and the natural habitat of various birds of prey including, the Golden Eagle one of the largest birds of prey in the province and the Griffon Vulture, whose numbers have risen by 52% in the last few years. Recent studies show there are now over 200 pairs of Griffons in the park alone. Soria has a number of Special Bird Protection Zones where you can see these and other protected bird species, such as the extremely rare Duponts Lark.
WILD FLOWERS AND HERBS
Along the network of walking trails that cross the province you will find wild flowers and herbs which have been collected by the villagers for centuries. Thyme, Lavender, Rosemary, Heather and Sage fill the air with their distinctive scent and the Chamomile collected has long been used for medicinal purposes. From spring the land transforms with colour as the Orchids, Iris', Peony and other wild flowers start to bloom.
RIO DUERO
As the streams make their way from the higher grounds towards the River Duero you will find an abundance of wildlife harbouring these areas. The Otter and European Mink are starting to make a welcome comeback and the rivers are teaming with fish including Trout and a variety of freshwater Crayfish.

HISTORY
The history of Soria is evident in every corner of the province. The rock art sites are testimony to human occupation in this area for over 5000 years. The fossilised dinosaur footprints dating back 140 million years are clearly visible in many archaeological sites . Evidence of its past great importance can be seen in the Celt Iberian and Roman settlements of Numancia, Tiermes and Uxama.
Soria has the greatest concentration of castles in Europe , as these were the frontier lands for the battles between Christian and Arab armies. Examples of Romanesque architecture can be seen in its numerous churches and hermitages and medieval villages tell tales of Knights Templar and El Cid. Antonio Machado, Spain 's favourite poet was sent into great heights of lyricism, by the beauty he saw whilst wandering these lands.
