La Casona de Villabaju I and II

Two well-furnished traditional Asturian casona houses, attached to a working farm, one with 5 double rooms the other with 7. Each bedroom has its own bathroom. Large garden areas. The restored houses form part of a 17thC monastery. More below.

I stayed here in August 2007 and fully recommend it. Cristina and her family are very friendly and knowledgeable about the area and nature in general and pointed out the herd of roe deer which grazed in the back field every evening. They have fresh-farm produce and free-range eggs. Fox and wild boar (which I saw very close up) are common.

Area

The house lies between the extremely picturesque hamlets of San Román and Villa, the latter with a great bar. The countryside is idyllic with rolling hills, green fields and lovely villages each with their quota of hórreos, and there are wonderful views of the Sierra de Sueve. The blight of eucalyptus is almost absent. The coast has great beaches at Playa de la Griega and La Isla and the fishing village are about 40 minutes drive across the hill range, the best place in Asturias to see wild Asturcón horses. The nearest town is Infiesto (3km) has good, cheap restaurants and good supermarkets. The Picos de Europa and Redes Natural Park are also nearby.
