Our house is a traditional old house, typical in Extremadura. We are situated at the edge of a little village beside the gentle hills of the Sierra de los Lagares, just ten minutes by car from the beautiful medieval town of Trujillo . Casa Rural El Recuerdo is an ideal base from which to explore Extremadura. We are within easy reach of all the main habitat types, supporting the rich diversity of wildlife which makes Extremadura special. Our location is also perfect for sight-seeing and culture, being centrally placed between Cáceres, Mérida, Guadalupe and the Monfragüe National Park .
The house has been carefully restored to maintain its construction in stone and vaulted ground-floor ceilings. Most of the rooms have original tiled floors. We have decorated the house with beautiful old furniture. One bedroom is wheel-chair accessible. The hillsides around the house have old olive groves with walks offering superb views. From the garden itself we have recorded over 110 different species of birds.
You will feel at home, relaxing beside the fireplace in the sitting room with its library and bird prints; having a meal in the dining room, where once wine was made; or resting in the individually decorated en-suite bedrooms. All bedrooms have heating and air-conditioning.
Mealtimes are flexible to meet your needs. We are also used to catering for a wide range of dietary preferences. We use our own organic olive oil for preparing evening meals which are based as much as possible on local produce, including our own organic vegetables, accompanied by the highly appreciated village wine. Homemade bread is served at breakfast. We can also provide packed lunches on request.
We also offer customised birding holidays in the heart of one of the best bird watching areas in Europe . We can offer spring itineraries (mid March to late May) as well as winter breaks ( November until mid-February), when the attractions include the vast population of wintering cranes .
We can also provide full-day and half-day guided birding trips.
Martin Kelsey started birding as a small boy over forty years ago and since then he has birded in five continents. He has lived and worked in many parts of the world: as an ornithologist, in conservation (for BirdLife International) and for the charity Save the Children. He was awarded the OBE in 2001.
Claudia Camacho grew up in Colombia and has long been active in ecotourism and outdoor recreational work. She worked in a travel agency specialising in ecotourism and wildlife tours in Colombia . Her other interests include football and Reiki.
Patrick Kelsey was born in India in 2000 and by the time he was three, he was already describing the plumage of sunbirds in the garden. However, he also has a keen interest in astronomy and dinosaurs.
